Coaching is a highly challenging, demanding and yet satisfying career. Coaches form the "backbone" of athletes. The multifaceted roles played by a coach go beyond just the playing field. Coaches not only help athletes realise and reach their potential best in the sporting arena, but are also instrumental in shaping the character of their athletes. Coaches also help nurture positive values such as teamwork, perseverance, and the never-say-die attitude that will help them to develop the resilience needed to handle many of life's challenges in the future.
Coaches are not only coaches in their respective sport(s), they also play the role of a mentor, counselor, friend, parental figure, manager, role model, teacher, confidante, motivator and the list goes on. As such, coaches are highly instrumental to the overall development of the athlete's character, potential and eventual sporting success. No accomplished athlete in the world can claim that they have succeeded without the support of their coaches.
SSC adopts a holistic and inclusive approach towards developing, recognising and raising the standards of sports, coaches, and technical officials in Singapore. Our Mission is to facilitate and enable the systematic development of sports and sports personnel through innovation, best practices, and development of quality coaching and officiating programmes.
To ensure that Singapore has an ever-expanding supply of professional coaches, the SSC's Coaching and Technical Development Division has introduced several training programmes and courses for existing coaches and athletes interested in becoming coaches. The SSC also offers funding initiatives through the NSAs and to the coaches directly to encourage professional upgrading.
