Coaching Development
Never underestimate the importance of a coach to an athlete. The coach will be the decisive factor as to whether an athlete has good experiences in sports or quits in frustration. A good coach is one who can communicate effectively with his charges, motivates them, provides leadership, ethical, has a deep understanding of good sporting principles, constantly seeks to upgrade oneself, and has an aptitude for planning and organization.

To ensure that Singapore has an ever-expanding supply of quality coaches, the Singapore Sports Council Coaching and Technical Development Division adopts a comprehensive and holistic approach towards coaching development.

The desired outcome for coaching in Singapore is envisioned as "Quality & Competent Coaches for Sporting Singapore". The strategic direction for Coaching Development is enabled via a systematic development of coaches through innovation and best practices, and the development of quality coaching programme.

Guiding the development of coaching is the following 3 key Enabling Strategies:
  • Coach Education & Training
  • Coach Employment
  • Coach Recognition
Strategy 1: Coach Education & Training
Strategy 2: Coach Employment
To enhance the employability of coaches, the Singapore Sports Council collaborates with external stakeholders such as the Ministry of Education, People's Association, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency and other tertiary institutions towards the hiring of competent and qualified coaches in the National Registry of Coaches (NROC) database.

Public Education & Awareness Programmes are an integral part in communicating to potential employers of coaches on what it means to be a coach at the various levels of competencies.

Strategy 3: Coach Recognition
As coaching is highly challenging and demanding, recognizing coaches' roles and contributions beyond that of sports coaching is of paramount importance. Much as athletes are recognized and rewarded on various recognition and award platforms, coaches should also be accorded similar, if not higher accolades.

Some of the initiatives supporting this key strategy include the annual Coach Recognition Awards (CRA), and privilege programmes for NROC coaches.
